Clients & Projects - 3 - Managed retreat and saltmarsh development

Since 2000, Pisces Conservation have been monitoring the development of a saltmarsh community following deliberate breaching of sea defences on the River Axe in North Somerset. As part of the managed retreat, the area is to be monitored for both physical and biological change over a ten-year period. Pisces have been studying the development of the invertebrate community as grazing land reverts to a classic saltmarsh.
Following initial investigations, bi-annual surveys are directed towards the spider, carabid beetle, amphipod and Heteroptera or true bug components of the fauna. Overnight pitfall trapping is carried out to determine the community structure of these groups.
Pisces staff have many years' experience in invertebrate sampling methods and statistical analysis, and are able to draw on consultants with specialised knowledge of individual groups. This monitoring is to continue until 2010.
