In a series of projects, Pisces Conservation have carried out detailed analysis and prediction of the effects of thermal discharges on salmon migration and other fisheries issues in Southampton Water and the Solent. Discharge consents exist for individual businesses, but the effects of all thermal discharges in combination have rarely been studied. Studies have been made:
predicting the deterrent effect of thermal discharge plumes on salmon migrating up-river to the Test and Itchen, both extremely well-renowned fishing rivers, and on the potential impact on fish used as a food resource for wading birds.
Pisces Conservation have developed complex modelling techniques for estimating impacts of thermal effluent and other abstraction/discharge issues, and can use a range of specially-developed software and expert systems to predict population dynamics and ecological effects.
